Camden County police say they are looking to cut down on crime in the city with help from artificial intelligence.

The department says it has added a program, called Directed Patrols.

"It predicts what areas we should put police officers in based on historical data," says Deputy Chief Richard Verticelli from Camden County Police Department. "It will give us information as to how many officers we should assign to an area and what they should be looking for as far as crime conditions. We arm our officers with that information and we task them with going out and policing in a proactive sense."

The department has been on the program for the past five days and says it will be testing it over the next three months.

The program detects when a gun goes off in the city and alerts analysts.

The department says it hopes this tool will make the streets and officers safer.

The department says so far in 2020, it has had five shooting incidents, but have taken more than 40 guns off the streets.
