Pole dancing classes are becoming more and more popular as a way to get fit.

New York Pole Dancing moved to the Bronx about a year ago, teaching women and men the unique form of expression.
When many think pole dancing, they may not immediately think of exercise.
"You mean like stripper? No. I mean like an athlete. Dancer," says owner Wendy Traskos.

Madeline Mota, from Fordham, and taught herself how to pole dance in her apartment, but ever since New York Pole Dancing came to Mott Haven last May, she says she's grown even more.

“I know myself more now and it's great to be around people who are encouraging. It’s also freaking hot and pretty cool,” says Mota.

Traskos opened New York Pole Dancing in 2005 in Midtown Manhattan, saying for the first time pole dancing was brought out of gentleman's clubs and into a studio.

Years later it's becoming more popular as a workout.

It consists of resistance training and working on endurance, all with the benefit of being able to express yourself.

“It is mostly women in their late 20s and 30s, but also some in their 50s and 60s come to the Mott Haven studio,” says Traskos. “Some are full on competitors, getting ready for the U.S. pole championship next weekend.”
