Bridgeport officials are warning residents about pool safety after a child drowned last week.
They say the toddler drowned in a backyard pool in Bridgeport after he was apparently left unattended at a family party.
Bridgeport officials are reminding resident that they should never let their guard down when watching a child near water.
"Tragedies can happen in the blink of an eye, so I can't emphasize enough how parents, guardians -- whoever is watching young people -- to be diligent and vigilant in keeping an eye on them in a pool," says Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim.
Police say the drowning is still under investigation.
There are an estimated 3,500 unintentional drownings that happen each year in the U.S., according to the CDC.
The CDC reports one in five of drowning victims are under 14 years old.
