Bridge-Gate witness: Box of ‘Christie Crème’ donuts caused ‘freak out’ in governor’s office
New allegations emerged Friday in the Bridge-Gate trial, including a reiteration of the claim that Gov. Chris Christie lied during a news conference about the scandal, as well as testimony that a box of doughnuts caused major drama in the office.
The defense presented an email in court apparently written by former Christie staffer Christina Renna, which was sent to defendant Bridget Kelly.
Renna testified that she wrote the email to Kelly on Sept. 12, 2013, about the Fort Lee lane closings which stated that the mayor of Fort Lee believed the lane shutdown was government retribution. Kelly apparently replied back to the email, "Good."
Kelly's attorney say that this email was presented to Gov. Christie's chief of staff a day before the Dec. 12, 2013, news conference where the governor denied having any knowledge of the lane closings.
Defense attorney Michael Critchley says the email shows that the governor was lying.
"I thought the word retribution is important," he later told reporters.
Renna testified that she was angry at Kelly due to a power struggle within the office. Kelly had asked Renna to delete the email, but Renna saved a copy.
The former staffer also testified that before Bridge-Gate, a box of doughnuts that said "Christie Crème" made the governor and his senior staff "freak out" on Kelly. Renna testified that an intern made the doughnuts for an office baking contest, and when the photos hit social media Kelly took heat from the governor.
The trial is expected to resume Tuesday.
