Beachgoers hit the sand and boardwalk in Asbury Park for Labor Day, while unsafe conditions kept them out of the water.

The boardwalk was bustling with activity, but strong currents left behind by Hermine prevented visitors from swimming.

The situation was similar in Sea Bright, Long Branch and other Jersey Shore communities. The rough surf is a reminder of how powerful the storm could have been if it came closer to the coastline.

But despite the dangerous surf, many beachgoers say the weather has been much better than expected. State leaders had earlier declared a state of emergency for some areas as Hermine made its way north from Florida.

Risks of strong winds and possible coastal flooding remain, but for many, Labor Day worked out well. Visitors who stayed put at the shore took advantage of quieter holiday roads and stores.

"I think it's beautiful, but it's a little chilly," says Kaitlin Kresley, of Allentown, Pennsylvania. "It's perfect just to sit on the beach. It's not crowded. It's nice."
