The Bayonne Bridge will soon reopen on Sundays while under construction in an effort to help alleviate traffic.
The decision was made after Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz made complaints about heavy traffic and gridlock at the Outerbridge Crossing last weekend. The crossing is typically the route for Staten Island residents visiting the Jersey Shore to get back to New York. The traffic is usually busier at the crossing in the summer months.
Diaz posted a video on Facebook Live showing how bad the traffic was and calling for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to do something.
“It was hours [of traffic delays],” Diaz says. “From 4 p.m. until almost midnight.”
Perth Amboy police were assigned to the area to direct traffic due to the chaos.
“It’s a safety issue too because a lot of our residents felt they were trapped in their homes because it was just from all over,” the mayor says.
The Outerbridge is one of three bridges connecting New Jersey to Staten Island. The other two are the Goethals Bridge and the Bayonne Bridge. But the Bayonne Bridge has been closed on weekends for several years while it undergoes construction.
Diaz and Port Authority officials were able to come to a compromise after the commuter outrage. The Bayonne Bridge will reopen on Sundays, which will hopefully ease the traffic conditions.
Port Authority officials say that the Bayonne Bridge will reopen this Sunday, hopefully around 3 p.m.
