A battle is brewing in Monroe Township after officials approved a tractor-trailer ban on three township roads, most of which are heading to warehouses in neighboring Cranbury.

Both Monroe Township and Cranbury are off the very busy exit 8A of the New Jersey Turnpike.

Before the ban can be implemented, it must first be approved by both the county and the state DOT.

Town officials say they have done the studies, and it shows 1,200 trucks and tractor-trailers travel on roads every business day.

The problem for Monroe is the trucks are all going to and from neighboring Cranbury, where most of the warehouses are.

So Monroe council members approved a ban on three roads -- Half Acre, Prospect Plains and Cranbury Station roads.

A resident of Monroe, who also works in town not far from the Cranbury border, says the ban certainly makes sense to him.

“There’s a lot of trucks coming into this area but all the warehouses are down there so there’s no need for them to be around this area,” says Vinny Concepcion.

Officials in Cranbury say they sent their attorney to the Monroe meeting to formally lodge its objection to the proposed truck restriction ordinance, and to request Monroe not begin enforcing the restrictions until it has received the required approval from both the county and the NJDOT, as is legally required.

It would appear that this battle has only just begun.
