Personal care establishments like hair salons, barbershops and tattoo parlors are booking appointments for customers ahead of the June 22 reopening date.
Chop Chop Bang Bang hair salon owner Steve Statland says that he hasn’t seen a customer since the shop closed on March 19. He says that he is eager to get back to work.
“We are booked through almost the third week of July at this point,” he says.
Statland says that he now has several days to get the shop ready to protect customers from the virus, including setting up an ozone generator.
“So essentially, you put it on at night for an hour and it disinfects the entire room,” he says. “We also ordered plenty of disposable capes, plenty of aprons, gloves, masks, everything to make sure our clients are safe.”
Statland says that he has been keeping his skills sharp by practicing on mannequin heads.
“I would take a mannequin and color it and cut it live on Facebook Live,” he says.

Some tattoo artists say that the transition to the safety guidelines has been easy.
“It’s not that different for us. We’ve had to have these precautions in place,” says Ninth Wave tattoo shop owner Dave Shoemaker. “From early on we’ve dealt with diseases – hepatitis and AIDS – and how they could possibly be cross-contaminating within the workplace.”
Shoemaker says that he has been cleaning up and adding space for each of the work stations in the Asbury Park shop.
“To gain 10 inches it took a lot of work,” he says.
Statland and Shoemaker say that their employees are all planning to return to work. All were able to stay afloat with unemployment benefits.
