Authorities have arrested a 17-year-old boy in a shooting that prompted a lockdown at Brick Memorial High School on Tuesday.
The teen was arrested Wednesday around 10 p.m. at a home in Asbury Park during a no-knock warrant.
The shooting happened just before 1:45 p.m. Tuesday about a quarter-mile away from the high school. The 16-year-old victim was grazed by the bullet and ran to the school to get help. Police say that he was not the intended target.
The incident caused a lockdown at the high school and two other nearby schools for a few hours while police investigated.
"It's not typical of Brick and I don't anticipate that it will continue. We have a very proactive street crimes unit. It's our selective enforcement team and they work closely with our drug unit and together they are usually on top of these things,” says Brick Police Chief James Riccio. “This person came into our town, did this heinous act and we brought him to justice.”
The 17-year-old, who was not identified because he is a minor, is facing four counts of attempted murder charges and an unlawful possession of a weapon charge.
Police say that Tuesday’s shooting is related to another drive-by shooting that happened Saturday. An 18-year-old was shot in the leg in that incident.
