Brick Township police say that a shooting that occurred a quarter-mile away from Brick Memorial High School Tuesday afternoon is related to another shooting that happened Saturday.
The high school and several other nearby schools were put into lockdown just before 2 p.m. Tuesday after a 16-year-old was grazed by a bullet ran to the high school to get help. Police say that the injured teen was let into the school by a student.
“The victim was alone. There were no suspects with or near the victim at the time,” police said in a statement.
Although Tuesday’s shooting was not at the school, the incident still left many people on edge. Security was increased at the high school Wednesday morning.
But sophomore Matthew Murphy told News 12 New Jersey that he was still a little nervous coming into school.
"I was walking over and I was just like, I know nothing is going to happen, but like you never know so it's a little bit unnerving I guess,” he said.
Police say that the shooting was an isolated incident and related to a shooting on Saturday that left an 18-year-old with a leg injury.
"We have no reason to believe this incident is anything more than an isolated situation developed between a small group of individuals,” police said in a statement.
Police say that they do not believe that the 16-year-old who was grazed on Tuesday was the intended target. They say that they are following up on leads.
Anyone who may have any information about either shooting should contact the Brick Township Police Department.
