Officials say that Little Egg Harbor police shot and killed a man who confronted them with a knife at his home.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office says a concerned family member asked officers to check on 47-year-old Francis Hartnett because Hartnett was "possibly suicidal" and attempting to harm himself.
Officers gained entry to the apartment on Tuesday morning and encountered Hartnett brandishing a knife, according to officials. Multiple officers opened fire when they said Hartnett came toward them after he ignored their commands to drop the knife.
Hartnett was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say Hartnett suffered from depression and had previously tried to kill himself.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the shooting.
