Gov. Phil Murphy says that anti-Palestinian hate and Islamophobia have no place in New Jersey. This comes after a Palestinian American Community Center in Clifton was bombarded with threats.
The community center already has surveillance cameras on the building, and now the Passaic County Sheriff's Office has a portable tower with cameras pointed right at the front door. Security has also been tightened.
Someone is using the recent fighting between Israel and Palestine to lash out against people of Palestinian descent living in New Jersey. The person is making those threats via phone calls.
“You’re a terrorist. There’s blood on your hands,” the caller said.
The rambling calls started on Tuesday and lasted all day.
“I’m a Jew. That’s all you need to know,” the caller said. “You guys are not even a real country.”
“We are hoping that politicians come out and condemn the anti-Palestinian hate that seems to have ripped the nation,” says Council on American Islamic Relations director Selaedin Maksut.
Maksut is calling on the FBI to get involved. The Clifton Police Department and county sheriff are taking the lead to find out who is making the calls.
“I’d just like to reiterate: We will not tolerate any type of hate crime, any type of threat or intimidation. Every ethnic group should feel safe,” says Sheriff Richard Berdnik.
After 11 days of intense fighting over land in Gaza, a ceasefire has helped to stop the violence between Israel and Hamas. However, emotions run high when the threats hit home in New Jersey.
“The good thing that came out of this is all of us getting together, all of us showing our humanity,” says PACC president Diap Mustaffa. “All showing our love and respect to the Palestinian community.”
Police say they will continue their increased patrols around the community center.
