The chief and one other member of a volunteer fire company in Atlantic County have been accused of stealing from the department.
Mizpah Fire Company Chief Jay Davenport and volunteer Craig Paxton were charged with misconduct, conspiracy and theft.
Authorities say that the two men allegedly created one or more unauthorized accounts at an auto parts store using fire company funds and tax-exempt status.
News 12 reported on Wednesday that investigators were at the firehouse removing evidence. The firehouse was closed during the investigation.
