Amazon officials say they predict that the company will soon reach 15,000 employees at the 10 Amazon facilities in New Jersey. This would tie Amazon with Verizon as the Garden State’s fifth largest employer.
Amazon has become such a mainstay in New Jersey that officials are pushing strongly to have Amazon consider Newark as the location of their second headquarters.
But Amazon has also been taking some heat as of late. President Donald Trump took to Twitter this week to criticize the company for not paying what he called its fair share of taxes. He also railed against the devastating effect the company's growth has had on other retailers.
One of Amazon’s largest facilities in New Jersey is located in Robbinsville. But there is another business in Robbinsville that is not doing as well – Harry’s Outdoor.
Harry’s Outdoor has been in business for 69 years, but won’t make it to 70. Owner Rich Mehr says that he is retiring.
“It's time to retire, the retail business is not quite as good as it used to be years ago,” Mehr says.
The owner, who inherited the business from his father, says that he would be happy to sell the business to someone who will keep it open. But he says that online shopping has made the future of retail uncertain.
“We haven’t really had bad business,” he says. “It’s just that it’s not improving. And I don’t want to ride it down to the worst spot.”
Some Harry’s customers admitted to News 12 New jersey that they are guilty of coming to the store to see items, and then going home to buy them on the internet.
Harry's will remain open until just about all of the inventory is sold. All items are currently on sale for 20 percent off.
