New statistics from the American Automobile Association may fuel Governor Jon Corzine?s proposed toll increase on two New Jersey highways.
AAA says New Jersey tolls are already a bargain compared to other toll roads in the Northeast. People are charged four cents a mile to drive the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway, a close second for cheapest according to statistics.
Corzine?s plan is to raise tolls on the parkway and turnpike to help pay off the state?s debt.
State Assemblyman Kevin O?Toole (R- District 40) is against the toll increase. "To hear that we're the second lowest, that's wonderful, but property taxes we're the highest, car insurance we're the highest,? O?Toole said.
Some drivers say they?d be willing to pay more at the tolls in order to give the state more money.
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority has to approve any toll increase by a majority vote, but the proposal is unlikely to be discussed until after the November election.
