A record number of Americans are expected to travel this holiday weekend, including 2.6 million New Jerseyans, according to AAA.
AAA said an estimated 107 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home between Saturday and Jan. 1. The predication is the highest year-end travel volume on record, and a 3.1 percent increase in travel volume compared with last year, according to AAA.
The motor club federation said driving remains the most popular mode of travel for the year-end holidays, both in New Jersey and nationally. Just over 177,000 New Jersey residents are expected to take a flight to their destinations, while more than 2.3 million are expected to drive, AAA said.
If driving, motorists can expect to pay an average of $2.49 for a gallon of gas, which is a penny less compared to last week. AAA said the price is 14 cents more than this time last year.
The New York City Department of Transportation said Friday marks the final “gridlock alert day” of 2017. The department advised that public transportation is the best mode of travel, but delays are still expected, especially Friday afternoon.
