Twenty cats were found living in a bug infested apartment in Neptune last week along with two young children, according to Monmouth County SPCA.
The animal shelter said an anonymous call led them to an apartment where they found the cats, two of them kittens, as well as a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old living in the bug-infested apartment.
According to the Hudson County prosecutor, an anonymous caller said the two children were often sent home from school due to poor hygiene.
The Monmouth County SPCA rescued and are now taking care of the cats. Many of the cats have upper respiratory infections, but they were found to be in fairly good health.
The director of Monmouth County SPCA says this was a situation where a family was struggling, and they were able to step in and provide support for the animals with other organizations stepping in to provide support for the family in other ways.
The organization is making sure all the cats are spayed, neutered and vaccinated so they are ready for adoption.
