Two World War II veterans from New Jersey are heading overseas to commemorate the anniversary of D-Day.
Matt Yacovino and Bob Gibson will be visiting Normandy with 13 other veterans.
The Best Defense Foundation is hosting the trip. A ceremony was held at Newark Liberty International Airport on Tuesday ahead of the trip.
The veterans will spend a few days in Atlanta before arriving in Normandy next Tuesday for D-Day.
Yacovino served in a PBY Bomber during World War II, sinking German submarines.
“I’ve been there before, very emotional for me. I have friends that died in Europe and if they’re in Normandy, I don’t know about it,” he says. “I know my brother has some friends in Normandy, buried there, so it’s very emotional for me to come back.”
Wall Township Police Officer Michael Malone is escorting the veterans. He is a volunteer with the Best Defense Foundation.
