Two women died in a fire at an independent living facility in Fair Lawn.
The fire broke out just after midnight at the Alliance Against Homelessness of Bergen County on Berkshire Road.
Fair Lawn police officers rescued at least three other women, according to police officials. They talked one woman out of the house through the front door and pulled out another from the living room. Officers rescued a third person from an upstairs bedroom by propping up a bedframe found in the garage to reach the victim.
The women were taken to a hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. One officer was slightly injured while rescuing those inside.
Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli says the fire started in an upstairs bedroom and there is no sign it was set. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, although arson has been ruled out.
The house is run by the Alliance Against Homelessness and is for people who suffer from mental disabilities and addictions.
No names have been released.
