2 dollar stores in NJ accused of price gouging; at least 4 charged for having customers at businesses

At least four people were charged last week for having customers at their businesses when they weren't supposed to yet, including a spa, pool and patio store and a car wash.

As of last week, the Division of Consumer Affairs has logged more than 5,100 complaints in more than 2,600 businesses around New Jersey related to the coronavirus emergency.

Almost 1,600 cease-and-desist letters have been sent, warning retailers about the penalties for violating the price gouging law -- 108 subpoenas have been issued.

The attorney general's office says a pharmacy was selling a can of Lysol for $12. A dollar store raised the price of rubbing alcohol from $1.29 to $8.99.
Another dollar store charged $6.99 for a box of gloves that previously cost $3.99.
