New Jersey Transit says that starting in July, one-way tickets will expire 30 days after they are purchased.
The agency says that any ticket purchased before July will expire by the end of July as well.
The decision comes as NJ Transit approved a 15% fare hike that will also take effect in July. There is also the potential for a 3% increase every following year.
Commuters at Orange Station in the City of Orange had a mixed response to the newly announced change.
“After 30 days, you probably should use your ticket. I guess that's not too much of a bad policy. Thirty days seems like a nice amount of time,” said Changa Sutton.
Travelers who buy their tickets in bulk for months at a time were confused by the new policy. Many said they will no longer do so.
“They shouldn't do that because it's our money that we're using on these tickets. Money doesn't expire. So the tickets that we buy shouldn’t expire,” said Michaela Joseph.
NJ Transit says the existing refund policy for tickets will remain in effect.
