283ds agoThe Yonkers Police Department joined forces with community podcasters "Brother to Brother" Friday in an effort to recruit more African American officers.
They held an event in Getty Square complete with a DJ and even an appearance from Spiderman.
"I grew up in the School Street housing projects, I have been very supported throughout my career, and I think we need to share that message particularly now and share our experiences," said Lt. Charlers Walker of the Yonkers Police Department.
Justin Moore, 20, stopped by for an application.
"The shooting yesterday ... I was walking up the street with my girlfriend when I heard that. That's ridiculous," he said.
Cheryl Browne picked up an application for her godson.
"We need more people who look like us to be in the department. That way, I feel that some young kids should be able to communicate better with them," Browne said.
The application deadline for the Yonkers police test is July 14. The police department offers a free online test prep course.
The exam itself is Sept. 18.
