The Princeton women’s basketball team is having a great season, having won 20 straight games and becoming nationally ranked.
But the Princeton Tigers say that they are just getting started and that great things are to come. The team is ranked No. 21 and have already clinched the Ivy League regular season title.
“We kind of implemented the hashtag #WhyNot immediately and I think we really struck to that the whole season,” says senior forward Bella Alarie, a two-time Ivy League Player of the Year recipient. “I think we really stuck to that the whole season. We’re a whole new defensive team, as many people see when they watch.”
At 24-1, the team has the No. 1 scoring defense in the nation – a defense put together by head coach Carla Berube and her staff.
“This is going to be a daily process for us to get to know each other, to work hard day in and day out and to get better,” Berube says.
Berube is no stranger to championship basketball, she was on the legendary 1995 UConn team that went undefeated on its way to a national championship. It was the first in the powerhouse program's history. Berube spent the last 17 years coaching at Tufts, leading the Jumbos to four Division 3 Final Four appearances.
“Every game is meaningful to us and every practice is meaningful, so every day they come in with the right mindset, working hard, working together,” Berube says.
Up next for the team is going for their third-straight conference tournament.
“We want to win the Ivy League Tournament and we want to go as far as possible in the NCAA tournament,” Alarie says. “I think this is a great year to do that. We want to make history for Princeton.”
Princeton has two games left in the regular season before the Ivy League Tournament begins next week.
