A frisbee league in Prospect Park features dogs and owners teaming up and competing before work.
The Brooklyn Disc Dogs was founded in 2018 by Navin Sivakumar, who wanted something more organized for him and his dog to do. They compete in the Global K9 Toss and Fetch League where dogs have one minute to catch as many frisbees as possible, racking up points depending on the distance of each catch.
“It sounds really simple,” Sivakumar said. “You need to teach your dogs to catch frisbees, you need to teach your dog to bring frisbees back to you and then you need to teach your dog to give them to you.”
But while it’s a dog frisbee league, both the dog and the owner are key parts of the team.
“It’s not just about the dog, you really need to throw well,” said Sarah Westscott, a dog agility instructor. “So the more you practice your throws, the better you’re going to be.”
Humans and dogs alike looking to join the Brooklyn Disc Dogs can sign up for the spring league that starts in April.
