Out-of-control driver destroys Bayonne veteran memorial

An out-of-control driver destroyed a veteran’s memorial in Hudson County.
Bayonne officials say that the driver crashed into the memorial at Bayonne High School’s Veteran’s Stadium last Thursday, leaving behind bricks and debris from the crashed vehicle.
“It looks like a construction job. Like, if we paid someone to come down and knock this down, this wouldn't be a bad job,” says Bayonne law director Jay Coffey.
Despite the damage, Bayonne officials say that they still plan to hold Memorial Day events this weekend.
“We still want to try and move the stone to a spot where they could still place the wreath,” Public Works Director Tom Cotter says.
Miraculously the actual tribute survived but officials say they're not taking any chances.
“We’re just waiting to make sure we can move all of this,” says Cotter. “We don't know if there's a crack underneath that we don't see.”
Coffey says there are plans to repair the memorial once again.
The driver was not badly hurt but was issued a ticket for careless driving.
