Stormy winds down trees, damage homes across Connecticut

Strong winds from the coastal storm downed trees and caused damage to some homes across Connecticut.
Kerry Washay, of the Morningside neighborhood in Milford, woke early Monday morning to find a tree in his backyard pushed over and the patio surrounding it pulled up.
He says the tree hadn't fallen onto the roof at that point, but he was worried about potential property damage.
“I’ve got Cadillacs that are worth a pretty good amount of money, so I got to get those out of the garage just in case the tree goes down,” he says.
Minutes after he moved the cars, Washay says the tree came crashing down.
Around the corner, work was underway to get a tree off another home. A neighbor says he heard a loud crash around 5:30 a.m., when it was still dark, and called the fire department.
“We didn't know the damage until it got lighter, later on in the day,” he says.
The neighbor says he's not surprised by the fall because he heard how strong the wind was.
“I’ve been here for probably 25 years…and been through the hurricanes, Sandy— this was about as loud and consistent as I’ve ever seen it in this area,” he says.
In downtown Milford, the Christmas tree on the Milford Green was another casualty of the weather. It was a fixture there for years, but it was no match for those powerful gusts.
The wind also led to clean-up in the Lordship section of Stratford. One woman says her canopy went airborne even though she tried to secure it with 100-pound weights.
