October is Safe Sleep Awareness Month and Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark wants to make sure putting your baby to sleep doesn’t become deadly.
Dr. Roy Vega says he’s seen four infant deaths, mostly due to unsafe sleep conditions, at BronxCare Health System so far this year.
It is precisely why he and the chief of neonatology at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore preach education.
"I think the most concerning thing to all of us who work in this area is the fact that these are preventable deaths,” said Dr. Campbell.
The Bronx Safe Sleep Task Force is made up of expert pediatricians, the city’s Administration for Children’s Services, the NYPD and the Bronx DA’s office -- all under one roof.
The task force led an Infant Safety Expo for parents on Wednesday, virtually due to COVID-19.
The Bronx’s DA’s office says that in 2019 there were 21 infant deaths --14 of them were sleep-related and therefore preventable.
There are almost as many sleep-related deaths now as there were all last year in the Bronx.
The Bronx DA’s office says the cold weather and the pandemic create a perfect storm for tragedy if there’s a lack of information.
