Prosecutor: High school athletic field shooting leaves 1 dead, 1 wounded
Authorities say a shooting on the athletic field of an Essex County high school has left a student dead and another wounded.
The shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. Sunday at Columbia High School in Maplewood, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. Responding police officers soon found 18-year-old Moussa Fofana, of Maplewood, who had been shot at least once, and a 17-year-old boy whose name was not released. Fofana was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later, while the wounded teen was treated at a hospital for injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
The shooting has rocked the residential neighborhood. The gates of the athletic field have been locked and all events for Monday were canceled.
Fofana’s family says that he loved soccer and looked out for his little brother. He came to the United States from Liberia when he was 10 years old.
"The kid, all he wanted to do was play soccer. He came every day, every day he came over,” says aunt Sharonda Pinckney. “His mom’s shop is here across the street, so he was here every single day with us and I never heard him be disrespectful, never disrespectful.”
No arrests have been made, but authorities said the shooting “posed no threat to the public.”
Anyone who may have information about the shooting is asked to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.
