Thanks to very low winds and controlled burns, the wildfires that have burned close to 5,000 acres across New York and New Jersey is now 69% contained in the New York side.

According to local officials, more than 300 firefighters from various state agencies as well as dozens of volunteer fire companies will be back at it Friday with more controlled burns.

In addition, a team of wildland firefighters from Montana and Colorado, also known as smoke jumpers or hot shots, have arrived to help with their expertise in fighting wildfires.

Two Chinook and two Blackhawk helicopters have been a huge help. On Thursday, they were able to dump about 170,000 gallons of water on the fires. Although fire officials tell News 12 the plan is not to use the helicopters Friday to allow for more back burns. That means people in the area can expect a lot more smoke.

A shelter is still set up at the American Legion for anyone who needs to get away from the smoke. There is no school Friday for Greenwood Lake students.
