Nassau legislators to vote on $375 tax rebate payment for homeowners on Friday

Nassau County legislators have decided to wait until Friday to vote on Nassau County Executive Laura Curran’s plan to give $375 to residents who have struggled during the pandemic.
Funds would come from leftover money from the American Rescue Plan.
Previously, Republicans did pass the $375 payment in committee but have expressed concern over how the funds could be distributed equitably and fairly. Some were also concerned about the tax implications for the funds.
“It has to be done the right way,” says Republican Legislator Richard Nicolello. “We are still going to do our due diligence. If all the ducks are in a row, I think at some point we can support it, but we have to get those answers.”
Homeowners making up to $168,900 would automatically qualify for the refund.
Earlier Monday, there was also a debate on the GOP-led plan to reduce nearly $100 million in real estate filing and traffic fees.
The vote was tabled on procedural arguments by Democrats who say the fees were initiated by former Republican county executives.
A few weeks ago, legislators and committees passed fee reductions that would include eliminating a $55 public safety fee on traffic violations, a $355 tax map verification fee and reducing the mortgage recording fee.
A vote on that bill will probably happen sometime in the next week.
