The man convicted in the 2018 killing of Frederick Hayes in the Bronx was sentenced Tuesday to 22 years to life in prison.
Akeem Samuel was found guilty of shooting Hayes in the head and torso on Andrews Avenue in the University Heights section of the Bronx.
Defense attorneys had said Hayes threatened Samuel with a gun days before the shooting, a claim that the Hayes family denies.
Family members say Hayes was a loving, devoted father who died at 27-years-old. He left behind a 10-year-old daughter.
Samuel was convicted of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a firearm.
