A Stamford native is one step closer to his dream of making it to the National Football League.

Omar Fortt just returned from an all-star showcase for college players aspiring to go pro.

The 23-year-old is from Stamford and recently graduated from the University of Connecticut, where he played linebacker and safety.

Now, the 6 foot 2 inches, 220-pound player says his next stop is the NFL.

"Throughout my UConn career, I've accumulated 233 tackles, eight pass deflections and interceptions, said Fortt.

Those stats helped him get an invite to the College Gridiron Showcase in Texas last weekend - an event for prospects to catch scouts' attention. Fortt says he talked to four NFL teams there.

"This journey has been crazy," he said.

Fortt went to Stamford High School and then St. Luke's School, but he got his start playing youth football in Springdale.

"Ever since then, I always had a passion for football," said Fortt.

It's a passion that is in his blood. His dad Guy and brothers Jafar and Khairi all played football in college. Khairi went pro in 2014.

"He was drafted fourth round to the Saints, so definitely have a long line of people who I'm following under. Our background in football is embedded deep in the family, and I'm just happy to carry it along," Fortt said.

He will spend the next two months training at TEST Football Academy in New Jersey and then will be watched by scouts at UConn Pro Day.

"That's like the final evaluation before the NFL Draft," Fortt said. "I think just taking it one day at a time is the best way to go. Obviously, Stamford is very near and dear to my heart. I want to represent the city and the state as well as I can."

Fortt isn't just focused on football. He also has a distribution company with his siblings and is interested in real estate. Fortt credits his parents for inspiring his drive and hustle.
