The mayor of Highland falls has admitted to two misdemeanors.
According to the Orange County D.A.’s office, Joseph D’Onofrio admitted to committing fraud on his 2021 reelection petition.
He also admitted photocopying a pair of signatures from another candidate’s petition and passing them off as his own.
He also admitted to buying a pair of trees with $159 in village funds and planted them in his home, then saying he planted them in a village park.
The 73-year-old D’Onofrio has already paid back that money.
For his guilty plea, he will pay a $250 fine and perform 40 hours of community service.
D’Onofrio was first elected as mayor in 1993 and the plea agreement does not disqualify him from holding office.
