Federal health officials say lettuce tied to a recent foodborne illness outbreak is believed to be off store and restaurant shelves, easing concerns for consumers who may still be wary about purchasing leafy greens.

According to the FDA, the outbreak began on July 17 and resulted in nearly 500 hospitalizations, including two deaths.

The region saw close to 700 cases of Cyclospora infection this year.

While the recalled products are no longer expected to be available for sale, health experts continue to urge consumers to take precautions when handling fresh produce.

Recommendations include thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables, practicing good hand hygiene and avoiding any products that have been recalled.

Health officials say consumers should continue monitoring food safety alerts and recalls issued by federal health agencies.
