President Joe Biden says he's considering suspending the federal gas tax to help drivers save money as fuel prices continue to surge across the country.
Record-high gas prices have been seen in New York City in recent days. A Citgo along the Bruckner Expressway was charging $5.49 for a gallon of regular gas on Monday.
Biden said Monday from his home in Delaware that he's thinking about putting a temporary pause on the federal gasoline tax. A decision should be made by the end of the week.
If the federal gas tax suspension was put into effect, drivers would save about 18 cents per gallon.
This comes after New York introduced its gas tax holiday, which knocked off 16 cents a gallon at the start of June. It is set to run until the end of the year.
It is unknown when the possible federal gas tax pause would end if it took effect.
