New Rochelle teen receives reply letter from President Biden
A 13-year-old from New Rochelle received a reply letter from President Joe Biden eight months after writing to him with concerns about the war in Ukraine.
Jason Wellington says he and his teacher read The New York Times every day. That’s when his teacher noticed that Jason had a passion for current events and encouraged him to reach out.
"She said, speak up and say something,” Jason says.
With the help of his mother, Kerry Wellington, Jason wrote up dozens of letters to politicians and media outlets, including the president.
The family says they forgot about it over the summer until an envelope arrived in the mail in late November.
"I was surprised. I was amazed. I thought no one would respond to me and then I got a letter from him…this is amazing,” Jason says.
Biden thanked Jason for sharing his thoughts and urged him to remain curious, creative and fearless.
Wellington says she and her husband raise their three kids not to be afraid to speak out.
"You might never know who you could help along the way by saying something or doing something,” she says.
There might be more letters in the future, but Jason’s real wish is to thank Biden in person.
"He wants me to speak out more which I will do,” he says.
