AAA is providing winter weather driving tips if you have to be out during a storm.

"Snow isn't the problem. It's really the low temperatures that create problems. Flat tires and low batteries are the items we get the most calls for," says Robert Sinclair Jr., of AAA Northeast.

AAA will be out in full force during the storm, helping those who simply can't stay off the roads. But if you need them, there might be a wait.

"Approximately one-third of our calls come from people who are home, and we're going to give priority to that two-thirds that are stuck out on the road," says Sinclair.

The roadside assistance company says to make sure your tires are properly filled and to check your washer fluid and windshield wipers.

It's also important to have a coat, gloves, food, water and a charged cellphone with you in the car in case you get stranded.

"Keeping some items in the vehicle like some basic tools, keeping some items in the vehicle, sand, non-clumping cat litter, oil absorbent to help you get out if you get stuck," says Sinclair.

Sinclair says something many people forget is to get their battery checked. A battery only lasts three to five years.

Also, a chemical reaction that makes the electricity in the battery slows down as it gets colder. Cars lose about 30% of power when the temperature gets near freezing. Cars lose 60% of the power when the temperature nears zero.

It's also important to understand that it can take a vehicle up to nine times longer to stop in snow and ice compared to clear conditions.

Posted speed limits are for ideal conditions, and a snowstorm is far from ideal, so keep your speed down and leave lots of distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.
