Fordham University gives ospreys a new home

Fordham University is building a new waterfront facility for its crew and sailing teams.

In addition, the university built a nesting pole for ospreys to house their eggs when they migrate to the area.

“When we were investigating and doing the design for the project, there was a nest and they would notice that the ospreys were here. And we don't want to disturb anyone's natural environment. So Fordham made the decision to invest in a permanent home for them,” said Marcella Gerbino, AVP of design and construction at Fordham.

The nesting pole is located in the middle of the water, so the ospreys have access to fish and can house their eggs in an elevated nest that’s safe from predators.

Students from Villa Maria Academy, the school next door, added branches to the nest before it was installed in the water to make the space more welcoming when the birds arrive.

The waterfront facility will be open in the coming weeks, but the osprey nest is ready as soon as the birds arrive.
