Hillsborough School District officials voted to get rid of middle school sports and will also be making staff cuts for the upcoming school year. This is the fifth year in a row that the district is having to make budget cuts.
Superintendent Mike Volpe says the district lost $2.7 million in state aid for the 2024-2025 school year. He says that while the district anticipated a cut in funding, they did not think it would be this much. Officials say that since the state changed its school aid funding formula, Hillsborough lost $7 million in aid.
"Decades ago, certain schools overfunded…so Hillsborough was one of those schools identified as one of those schools that were overfunded. So, the school funding formula was supposed to even that out. So, the state is now taking away state funding,” Volpe says.
Volpe says that while he understands there needs to be a balance, he doesn’t think it is right to take away funding from students who are currently in school.
A final meeting will be held Monday to decide the school budget future.
