Woman stabbed multiple times in Newark; husband in custody after standoff
Police say a woman was stabbed multiple times by her husband in Newark.
Officers were called to a home on Seventh Avenue and Dillard Court around 11:30 a.m. Friday. A man allegedly stabbed his wife in front of her grandson.
Neighbor Davon Greely says that the boy ran out of the house looking for help, so he rushed to intervene.
"He couldn't even breathe," Greeley says of the boy. "He was traumatized. He just wanted to leave. He had no shoes on."
Greely was able to get inside the home and says that he found a bloody scene. He says the man inside the apartment lunged at him with a knife.
"He swung it, and when he swung it, he grazed me," Greely says. "He scratched me so I couldn't get the lady because every time I come up he would stab her."
Greely says that he ran and got a broom to fight his attacker off and he was able to get the woman out of the house.
"She couldn't scream, she'd been stabbed so many times. I wanted to cry," he says.
The husband then barricaded himself inside of the home, leading to a four-hour standoff, according to police.
The man surrendered and was taken into custody.
The woman was taken to the hospital and is said to be in critical condition. The boy was not harmed.
