A winter storm brought some snow, sleet and rain to New Jersey and coated parts of the state in a layer of ice.
Dozens of schools around the state saw delayed openings due to the weather, along with a slower morning commute.
Parts of Morris County had several trees down due to the weather and ice accumulations of about a quarter of an inch. Power lines were seen sagging from the weight of the ice. Breezy overnight conditions may cause some power lines to fall.
A salt truck crashed into a utility pole in Totowa around 8 a.m. Tuesday, knocking out power to the area, including Gold’s Gym. PSEG crews were on the scene making repairs.
“It’s a main power line. Completely torn apart. It tripped, sparking all morning in this weather,” says Gold’s Gym owner Jeff Mortman.
A spokesperson for PSEG says that repairs should be completed by early Wednesday morning.
The southern half of the state saw more rain than ice. The rain caused flooding in areas like Deal, which caused some traffic issues. Public works crews had to clear out the storm drains in that town and pump water off the roadways.
Forecasters say that overnight temperatures are expected to be near or below freezing, which could make for some dangerous icy conditions as wet surfaces refreeze.
