The Westwood Police Department is working to ensure that all children in town are safe while riding their bicycles.
Police drove around town looking for children under the age of 17 who are following the bicycle helmet law. Those who are following the law were given tickets to receive free ice cream at Conrad’s Confectionery.
“We saw a bunch of kids riding their bikes with helmets and we said, ‘You know what? Let’s do something to reward them.’ And it’s a good, positive interaction they can have with the police department,” says Westwood Police Lt. John Hurtuk.
The police have given out dozens of these free scoops over the summertime. The program goes back several years. Police used to do it in partnership with a local pizzeria. The program lasts until school returns, just after Labor Day.
