Westwood goes green to save some green
Bergen County officials are trying to determine how to power the borough of Westwood with solar power.
A piece of land behind Westwood's Department of Public Works will be filled with models of town buildings. Using mirrors, sunlight and the models, borough officials hope to calculate how much power the town could generate from the sun.
"The federal government has Area 51, where they do some of their experiments ? this is where the borough of Westwood's doing its experiments in sustainability," says borough administrator Bob Hoffman.
Westwood officials say they hope to get off the energy grid within five to six years. In addition to solar power, a micro-turbine in the Pascack Brooke will be used to generate additional electricity. Westwood has also been utilizing hybrid police vehicles.
It is estimated that the use of alternative energy will save taxpayers about $150 per year.
