West Orange Township officials unveiled a new program to protect the town’s at-risk population.

The “Take Me Home” program helps law enforcement locate missing seniors, children with special needs and other citizens who are at a high risk of wandering off.

Family members supply a photograph, along with a description of the person and emergency contact information. All of that information is placed into a database for police to access. This allows police and other emergency personnel to save valuable time to contact family members or caregivers quickly.

“It happens frequently and often enough around the state. We have Silver Alerts and things like that at our disposal,” says West Orange Police Chief James Abbot. “We’ve come up with more programs, and we don’t want to necessarily reinvent the wheel, but we want to get better at what we do.”

The program is not limited by age or disability. Family members can sign up at the police station or at the township’s website.
