A team from the National Weather Service will head to Morris County to investigate if a tornado touched down in one of the towns.

A local state of emergency was declared in Madison Friday after a powerful storm left most of the town dealing with damage. The storm uprooted trees, tore down powerlines and caused power outages.

School was canceled for the day and the mayor urged everyone to stay home so that crews were able to clean up the mess.

Residents say that the storm came through hard and fast.

“I thought it was Armageddon and it was the rapture,” says one Madison resident. “It was like a train, like they say a freight train running through my bedroom.”

“We heard the wind in the middle of the night…I didn’t really hear the trees come down, which is surprising,” says Barbara Hughes. “I came out as soon as it got light and I couldn’t believe it, but [a tree] was on both of the cars.”

The state of emergency was lifted around 5 p.m.
