Wayne Hills High School football team wins appeal over playoff ban
The Wayne Hills High School football team can play in this weekend's state quarterfinal playoffs, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association has ruled.
The team was originally banned from the playoffs after the state ruled that two players, the Hayek brothers, did not meet the state's residency requirements to play on the team.
The brothers, considered to be two of the team's best players, had moved from Montvale to Wayne, and there was question about whether or not they were eligible to play on the team.
In a five-hour meeting with NJSIAA officials, a lawyer for the players presented documents and witnesses to prove the players' change of address.
NJSIAA officials say that when presented with the new information, they ruled that the team can still play in the state playoffs.
"I was worried about the team and the way the kids would be looked at at school. I didn't want to be the cause of this whole thing. And that's why I was very happy that the truth was able to come out," says Vic Hayek, the players' father.
The team is set to play Saturday in the state quarterfinals against Roxbury.
