There's a push to lower the speed limit in the Village of Babylon following a number of accidents.
The mayor and residents say there have been accidents at the intersection of Park and Livingston avenues. Village officials are looking to lower the speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph on Livingston, Litchfield, Camdan and Fredrick avenues to slow down traffic.
"There is an accident here every week," says Allie Kresek, of Babylon. "I hear them all the time."
One problem is that the village can't lower the speed limit on Park Avenue because it is a county road. Suffolk is studying the intersections and traffic patterns, but village officials say the county is taking too long and needs to take action now.
Mayor Ralph Scordino says lowering the speed limit is something he can do quickly, but adding speed bumps or other measures would take time.
"Yeah I would like to see the speed limit lowered, but I don't think it is going to make much difference," says Mike Reilly, of Babylon. "You got to slow them down one way or another."
Meantime, officials plan to look into whether GPS apps like Waze and Google Maps are routing traffic onto the village roads.
Village officials will seek public comment on lowering the speed limit on the roads at its next meeting Tuesday.
