A vigil was held in Elizabeth tonight for a college student who may have been murdered in a case of mistaken identity.
Police say Anthony Holmes Jr., 21, was gunned down Wednesday night at the corner of Third and Pine streets, where several other fatal shootings have occurred in recent years.
His father, Anthony Sr. says his son was not involved in gang activity and wished to return to Elizabeth from Pemberton to care for his sick grandmother.
Community activist James Carey blames the high murder rate on a mix of illegal guns and elected officials who refuse to admit that a gang problem exists in Elizabeth.
Anthony is survived by his father, his mother, Phoebe, sister Aniyah and 5-month-old son, Aamir.
