Neighbors of a Hackensack man shot and killed by police have set up a memorial on the street corner where he was killed, and a vigil was held at his home on Johnson Avenue.

Raymond Peralta-Lantigua was shot and killed by a Hackensack police officer Thursday evening. According to the Bergen County Prosecutor's office, police were responding to a 911 call at the home. Peralta-Lantigua then supposedly got into an altercation with officers. A knife was found on the scene.

His mother, Rosie Lantigua says her son could not understand the officer's commands to drop the knife he was carrying because he only spoke Spanish. She was the one who originally called 911 because she says her son was out of control. She says she hoped officers would take him to the hospital.

The officer who shot Peralta-Lantigua has been placed on administrative leave.
