The United States Coast Guard has suspended an active search for a New Jersey man who went missing off Lumaha’i Beach in Kaua’i, Hawaii.
Matthew Preziose, of Middletown, was last seen Saturday before he was swept off in waters off Lumaha'I on the north shore of Kaua'i. Rescuers were dispatched around 1 p.m. due to reports of two swimmers in distress. Police say only one swimmer made it safely to shore.
Officials say crews conducted 35 searches over 61 search hours and covered 652 square miles with no sign of Preziose. The search was called off on Tuesday.
“These are always the most difficult decisions to make in our line of work and our condolences go to Mr. Preziose’s family and friends,” Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Lackey said in a statement.
The active search will remain suspended pending further information on Preziose’s whereabouts.
